Hello folks

My name is Stevie. Live in Fife. Complete noob to detecting.

I remember my dad having a detector in the late 70's early 80's. We used to go on holiday to a wee place in the north of Scotland called Watten. Our dad used to make us find our spending money for the next day with the detector around the campsite.

Was helping my parents move recently and found that old detector!! Started me thinking, so it did. Decided that I just had to get one. ( i'm in the demographic, 40/55yrs lol )

Be gentle with me here. Was looking at a Garrett, and all the stuff i read told me get a Garrett. I didn't get a Garrett. I got an Intey 9.8,looks like its a chinese copy! But budget dictated.
Should have waited and got the Garrett, eh.

Only had one trip down the beach so far. Took some auld, pre war 3d and some gold, lol.
It works a treat. Found the silver at 5 inch and the gold a wee bit deeper. Had a wee mooch about but only found rubbish.

Like ma fishing and camping, play guitar and interested in history.
Hope to make it to the dig this weekend, if ye'll have me.

Look forward to meeting yeez.

All the best.

Stevie.

Hi Stevie and welcome to the forum. I got into detecting the same way, my old man’s Whites detector with just 2 dials on the control box... hours of fun. Detectors have come a long way since then...I’ve been at it a few years now, it’s an addictive hobby. Be warned! Grin.

I was down in Edinburgh at the weekend, ( I was volunteering at an archeological battlefield survey near Stirling. ) and I managed a trip to the NMS. If you’re interested in history, they’ve got a great display on ‘till the end of the month. Roman coin hoards, lots of silver items and plenty of hammered gold coins to whet your appetite. Well worth a look.

Have you had a shot at playing Johnny Flynn’s acoustic number from the ‘Detectorists’ soundtrack? ( U’ll need a capo on the second fret missing out the low E. ) It’s a Good riff.

Good luck with your new detector and happy hunting Smiley
